Movie Review - Love Actually

June 9, 2008 / by branzenbach

What do you do when your husband is working out of town and your children are all out busy with their own lives?  Well, I watched an older movie.  I had recently come across the movie, Love Actually, on cable.  It looked interesting but had started more than thirty minutes before I had tuned in, so I wandered down to the movie store and rented it.

It was a wonderful British film with many familiar actors.  Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth and Emma Thompson are just a few of the many talented folks.  The movie is all about love. I’m thinking the writer, Richard Curtis, was stuck on layover at an airport when he came upon the idea for the film.

You see, the film begins in an airport arrival gate where people from all walks of life come in and are greeted by their friends and family.  Most greetings are emotionally charged and love is everywhere.

The story follows eight couples in various stages of love, with some even falling out of love.  Two of the situations really resonated with me.  Colin Firth plays Jamie Bennett, an author who comes home to discover his girlfriend having an affair with his very own brother.  This leads him to take his writing elsewhere. He rents a small cottage for himself and his typewriter.  For domestic assistance, he employs a young Portuguese girl who speaks no English.  Their inability to communicate is comical and does not hinder a spark of romance.

Daniel, played by Liam Neeson, lays his wife to rest.  He has an eight-year-old son who he thinks is in serious trouble of depression over the death of his mother.  He is pleasantly surprised to find out that the young boy is not depressed.  Instead, he is head over heels in love with a classmate.  The sadness comes from the fact that the young girl is heading back home to the United States and will never know that she is loved.  The father and son work together to navigate the situation which turns out to be just what they both need so soon after the death of Daniel’s wife.

The Brits really know how to make me laugh.  Their bluntness is refreshing and love stories always make me cry.  I recommend this movie to anyone who has not seen it.  Of course, it is truly a “chick flick”.  Additionally, the music is outstanding!

Yep, I agree, the film has a good script, nice  music,  solid acting, and a healthy dosage of dry British humor.

Also,  I think the ending is one of the most visually powerful  sequences  I've seen in a long time.

Thank you.  I completely forgot all about the music.  I'm going to look around for the soundtrack.
